Battle of Baltimore

Last Saturday, I was a part of Collegetown history!  Last weekend was “Battle of Baltimore” weekend.  For the past four years, Loyola has been hosting the Battle of Baltimore Basketball Tournament.  I wanted to expand on that program, so for the past six months Collegetown has been working with Intramural Directors/Coordinators at six institutions to host a Baltimore wide intramural tournament.  In our initial meeting back in November, we decided to co-sponsor a Coed Softball Tournament.

Let me set the stage for you.  We’re there on the morning of Saturday April 19th at the Safety City Fields at Druid Hill Park setting up for the tournament.  The weather couldn’t have been any better – the sun was shining and not a cloud in sight!  Students started rolling in at about 9:15 to get warmed up and  prepared for the series of games throughout the day.  We handed out really cool T-shirts and at the same time students are totally psyched for the big tournament.

In terms of the structure, we had six teams from five schools.  We had two pools, three teams each.  The top two teams from each pool advanced to the semis.  Overall, we played nine games throughout the day.  We  ordered pizza from Papa John’s so the students were well fed!  We wrapped up at about 5:30 and in the end, the UMB Law edged out Hopkins to win the tournament.  On the basketball side, Morgan State “Coldspring and Hillen” took home the trophy.

Althought the planning was psuedo stressful, in the end it all worked out and It was really great to see various students from the Baltimore area interact with each other.  They really had a great time and they are already talking about future intramural tournaments!  (Sounds good to me!)  I’m actually hoping for one in the fall.  It’s been a pleasure working with the Intramural Directors Commitee and I look forward to working with them in the near future.
